The Ability Ball is designed to bring the entire community together to celebrate people’s abilities. Our aim is to provide a genuinely inclusive opportunity for people to enjoy a night of food, dancing and entertainment, while promoting awareness and understanding of the valuable contribution people with disability make to our local community.
The Ability Ball was first held in 2013 at the Brother’s Sports Club, Bundaberg. It was promoted as an affordable opportunity for people with a disability to come together for a night of dancing and entertainment. The event was also open to families, carers, local service providers and the general public. The Ability Ball was well supported and hailed as an enormous success with over 200 guests and entertainment from Andrew Wishart, the 2012 X Factor Runner Up.
The Bundaberg region enjoyed two Ability Balls in 2014 the second celebrated the International Day of People with Disability. Community engagement of the Ability Ball resulted in a change of venue to the Bundaberg Civic Centre in order to cater for over 300 guests. With guests travelling from throughout the Wide Bay Burnett region, the Ability Ball expanded holding the first Fraser Coast Ability Ball in 2015.
Guests have danced the night away to the sounds of Dean Vegas - Elvis impersonator, Living on a Prayer – A tribute to Bon Jovi, ABBA Live tribute show to name a few. The Ability Ball is privileged to have hosted Australia’s own Lynne McGranger, Home and Away actress, guests were thrilled the meet Irene!
The Ability Ball would not be possible without the support of our major sponsor Auswide Bank. Our others sponsors that either give a monetary donation or their time and expertise to ensure the event runs smoothly. Most importantly a successful night would not be achievable without the support of the community and other disability organisations within the Wide Bay Burnett region.
